Mobile Telephone Cell Site Analysis

Cell site analysis is the examination of mobile telephone Call Data Records and analysis of cellsites through which calls were routed.  Cellsite analysis can be used to determine the likely area in which a mobile telephone was when a call was made or received and equally where a mobile telephone was not when a call was made or received.

For example if a crime occurred in London and a suspect claims he and his mobile telephone were in Birmingham at the relevant time cell site analysis might reveal whether or not the suspect's alibi is plausible.

Equally journeys over large geographical distances (for example in the case of the the Omagh Bombing) can be tracked after the event via cell site analysis.

Although the mobile networks undertake computer predictions of the service area a particular mobile cell site should cover it is often the case that within that theoretical service area there are blackspots where service from that cell is not possible although the theoretical plot says it should be. Equally true there will be areas outside the theoretical service area where service is not predicted but does occur - whitespots.

In some cases involving mobile telephones a person may claim to have been in an area outside the theoretical service area of the cell site that routed the call.  We use specialised GSM mobile telephone measuring software and Global Positioning by Satellite equipment to measure the various cells available and simultaneously log our global position.  The data provides proof of the extent of coverage of a cell or cells and thus the claim  can be proven or refuted.
