Mobile Telephone Memory Contents Retrieval

Increasingly the contents of a mobile telephone memory are pivotal to a case. Retrieval of the last dialled digits, last calls received and last unanswered calls can have an important bearing on a case as can the contents of the stored electronic phone book and any SMS text messages sent or received.

In most circumstances we can retrieve SMS text messages that have been deleted from the SIM card by the user. Often it is the deleted messages that are of greater importance than those that have not been deleted.

The new 3G (UMTS) SIM card include both GSM technology and 3G technology. Special equipment and software is required to examine these new SIMs. We are able to undertake 3G examinations.

We get lots of enquiries along the lines of "I think my husband/wife etc. is cheating on me can you tell what messages she's been sending/receiving?  Also make sure he/she doesn't find out I'm checking up on him/her."

We need to make two things clear. 1) We do not have some kind of secret access to telephone network records any more than you do (unless you are in the secret service), 2) To examine the mobile telephone and SIM they have to be sent to us and if it is your husband's/wife's mobile telephone then they will pretty much guess you are up to something.

Telephone Call Record Analysis

Some cases involve complex records of calls made between telephones. Analysis of the records can indicate subscriber trends and habits which may produce a different picture to that when only a few selected calls are considered.

For example it is hard to claim no relationship of any sort existed between individuals if the call record analysis shows numerous and frequent calls between the individuals.  Similarly a burst of activity out of character in the records may indicate that a particular time period or date was of significance to the user.

Conversely if one examines a years worth of records and finds only one or two calls between telephones it is difficult to argue that there exists a relationship between the two users.
