Tool marks
Tools are often used during a crime - a large screwdriver may be used to prise open a window, for example, and just like a fingerprint can convict a crook – toolmarks left behind in paint, putty, plaster or wood can be equally incriminating.
Tools have distinguishing features – not just their physical design, but also the material they’re manufactured with. The actual striation marks within the metal a tool is forged from can be compared, matched, and used to match a tool to a crime scene. Slide marks and cutting marks made by tools on other materials can also reveal a wealth of information under a comparison microscope.
Jonathan Spencer BSc(Hons) has been a forensic scientist specialising in tool marks and related material since 1995. He is engaged in 75+ cases per annum. These cases have originated from England & Wales, Scotland, Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland, Oman, the Philippines, and the United States. He has testified to all levels of Court throughout the United Kingdom and the Republic of Ireland. The English Court of Appeal found Mr. Spencer to be "a most careful and impressive witness" (R v Paul Cleeland [2002] EWCA Crim 293, 13 Feb 02).
Jonathan Spencer is a Member of the Forensic Science Society, the International Association of Bloodstain Pattern Analysts and Association of Firearm and Toolmark Examiners.
